Strait Talk Ep. 65

The President and CEO of Maritime Launch Services, Steve Matier, welcomed approval from the provincial government for $30.7 million through the Capital Investment Tax Credit (CITC) to support construction of a dedicated launch pad for small launch vehicles near Canso.

Maritime Launch Services Inc. (MLS) is a Canadian-owned commercial space company based in Nova Scotia, developing Spaceport Nova Scotia, a launch site designed to provide satellite delivery services for the growing commercial space transportation industry across a wide range of inclinations. Spaceport Nova Scotia will enable small and medium-sized launch vehicles to place satellites into low-earth orbit and is Canada’s first commercial orbital launch complex, the company noted.

Back in June, MLS received provincial approval under the CITC for the construction of the dedicated launch pad. The separate, stand-alone platform is designed to serve the company’s expanding international customer base. The project includes a full suite of specialized infrastructure required for safe and efficient orbital launch operations, including a flame diverter, gas and propellant system interfaces, electrical and power systems, civil works, and other mission-critical components tailored to modern small launch vehicles.

Matier stated that the funding sends a strong message to the global space industry that Nova Scotia is open for business and helps build the foundation for Canada’s commercial space sector. The project is expected to generate up to 30 jobs in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, while infrastructure development and ongoing operations will drive demand across local construction, hospitality, and service sectors.

Spaceport Nova Scotia is anticipated to anchor a new high-tech sector in the region, diversify the local economy, and position Nova Scotia as a global destination for space and satellite companies.
