Unique Relationship between City and Local YMCA Explained

With the YMCA of Clarence-Rockland having been closed to the public since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the re-opening of the facility in early November is a welcome change come these fall months.

Thomas Stockting, journalist for TVC22, had the opportunity to speak with two key people in the operations of the Y: Jean-Luc Jubinville, Director of Operations Services for the City of Clarence-Rockland, and Tracy Ware, General Manager for YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region.

The relationship between the City and the YMCA is unique, since the city owns the building that the YMCA is operating in, while in most cases the YMCA themselves own the building.

In regards to the history of the unique relationship, Jean-Luc explains how the city expressed their desire for an indoor swimming facility in the early 2000’s, the YMCA was chosen as a service provider to run the operations due to them being a family oriented organization with a good reputation.

Tracey explains the daily operations of the Y, and the programs they offer in Health, Fitness and Aquatics.

When it was closed during the Covid-19 lockdowns, the facility was maintained by key staff, and was in use by students of École secondaire catholique L'Escale, which is connected to the YMCA.

On a final note, Tracy says that the best way to stay informed about the upcoming re-opening is to connect through social media on their Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as their website.

Tracy expresses how much she is looking forward to having patrons back in the facility.
