Wiikwemkoong Class of 2020 Post Secondary Virtual Graduation Ceremony
On Thursday July 30th, the Wiikwemkoong Board of Education and Wii-ni N'guch-Tood Labour Market Services teamed up with FirstTelTV5 to provide a "virtual" post secondary graduation for students and the community, that was broadcast live on the internet and on the community channel.
Under normal circumstances, the community celebrates it's post-secondary graduates with a ceremony on stage, with drum and pipes, the handing out of eagle feathers for achievement and words of wisdom from elders and leaders. This year, however, was a little different due to COVID-19 restrictions. The ceremony, however, could not be stopped! Valedictorian speeches were filmed ahead of time, and a slideshow of the students was compiled and edited, and broadcast in place of students walking across the stage. Ogimaa Peltier, and others, gave words of encouragement, hoping students would take what they have learned, and 'bring it back home' in order to make Wikwemikong strong. Over 95 graduates were honoured this year.
Miigwetch to Kerry Assiniwe for hosting, and miigwetch to all the graduates for all their hard work and perserverance!
