Community Growth, Safety, and Healthcare Take Centre Stage at St. Stephen Council Meeting

The June 2025 Committee of the Whole meeting in the Municipal District of St. Stephen featured a full agenda, covering everything from economic development to healthcare and community safety.

The meeting opened with a presentation from entrepreneur Ron Fournier, who introduced a proposal for a new helicopter tour operation. Fournier highlighted St. Stephen’s unique advantage—its airport’s proximity to the downtown core—making it an ideal location for high-end aviation tourism. He outlined the need for infrastructure investments to accommodate increased traffic, including the installation of jet fuel services and upgrades to hangar facilities. The potential for economic spinoffs was noted, and councillors expressed interest in exploring the proposal further.

The focus then turned to public safety, with updates from the RCMP on recent activity in the area. Councillors raised concerns about unsightly and unsafe properties, including those monitored through the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) initiative. Committee members called for stronger collaboration and communication between law enforcement and SCAN officials, especially in addressing incidents like fires at known problem properties, which place a financial burden on the community.

Healthcare recruitment remained a pressing priority. Deputy Mayor Ghislaine Wheaton and Councillor Emily Rodas shared encouraging news: a new physician has committed to beginning practice in St. Stephen in July. The discussion also touched on efforts to revise the municipality’s Medical Professional Recruitment Policy, with the goal of better supporting nurse practitioners and filling critical service gaps. Emphasis was placed on creating a welcoming environment to help new medical professionals put down roots in the area.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on improving public communication, particularly around the budget process. The idea of hiring a communications officer was floated as a way to strengthen engagement and transparency. Councillors also explored holding pop-up information booths to encourage dialogue and ensure residents feel heard on the issues that matter most.
