Local Veterans Honoured with Heroes in Our Midst Awards At KIRA Amphitheatre in St. Andrews, NB

The annual Heroes in Our Midst Awards ceremony took place in July at KIRA Amphitheatre located at Kinsbrae Gardens in St. Andrews by-the-Sea, recognizing the remarkable contributions of two local veterans, Herb McGee and Paul "Trapper" Cane. The event, organized by Mrs. Lucinda Flemer, her son Howard, and Mayor Brad Henderson, aimed to honour the bravery and selflessness displayed by these individuals throughout their military careers.

Herb McGee, a distinguished veteran of the Second World War, was knighted by the French government in late 2022. The 98-year-old war veteran from Saint Andrews was awarded the rank of knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour, which is the highest national order of France, in recognition of his personal involvement in the liberation of France during World War II. McGee joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 when he was just 18 as an Tail Gunner, flying 40 missions over France and Germany during the Second World War. McGee's Heroes in Our Midst award acknowledges his unwavering dedication to his country and his continued commitment to his fellow veterans. McGee's daughter, Bev Mayer, spoke on his behalf and expressed her pride in her father's accomplishments.

Trapper Cane, a retired member of the Canadian Armed Forces now living in St. Stephen, was honoured for his exceptional service in the Canadian Armed Forces. Cane's military career was marked by numerous achievements, including his role as a sniper and his contributions to the Canadian Airborne Regiment. Following his retirement, he co-founded the Canadian Army Veterans motorcycle unit, which has raised funds for various charitable causes.
