MMIWG Virtual Drum Social
On May 5, 2020, Wikwemikong community members held a 'virtual drum social' online, that was broadcast on the community channel in order to respect social distancing measures because of COVID-19, to commemorate the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
The community joined in singing and drumming virtually with Dorothy Wassegijig-Kennedy and Lisa Osawamick as Nookomisnaang Shelter commemorated all missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. A virtual smudge was performed and people were encouraged to bring out their own drums and sing along at home. Community members were also encouraged to display a red dress or ribbon in their front yards and light a candles for prayer during this day and event.
