St. Andrews by-the-Sea Celebrates Pride Month with Drag Show
June is Pride month around the world, and St. Andrews by-the-Sea is expanding how it participates in Pride by hosting a drag show at KIRA Amphitheatre on June 11th for all ages at 1pm. All proceeds from the show will go towards Charlotte County Pride.
Normand Hector who goes by the stage name Normani will be headlining the show. Hector is currently New Brunswick's only Black drag performer and has performed around the province at a variety of venues from stages to community centres to even hockey game half-time shows. He will be bringing with him other big names in New Brunswick's drag scene such as Amore Love as well as incorporating local performers from St. Andrews into the KIRA show.
"I think there are many different reasons drag has become more mainstream and is enjoyed by a wider range of people," says Hector. "Different drag performers cascade different messages, and I always want to make sure my message is heard and understand in my performances. If you are doing something that is positive and living your truth, people see that and embrace that. You can inspire people to be true to themselves."
Brad Henderson, who is the marketing director of Kingsbrae Garden and KIRA Amphitheatre says this could be the first show in a long tradition of Pride drag shows at the beloved amphitheatre.
"We were thinking of ways to get more involved in Pride, and this was a perfect opportunity," says Henderson. "By donating proceeds to Charlotte County Pride, this also allows us to give back locally to the LQBTQ+ community."
