ACN40: Dueling Councils and A Possible Snap Election in BC

The Ashcroft council had three delegations to start things off:

Vicky Trill, talking about the Ashcroft HUB, and asking for a letter of support for new grant opportunities coming in the future. (Disclosure: The Ashcroft Hub's Local Journalism reporter is employed by the Hub).

Martina Duncan was there on behalf of the St.Albans Soups on Ministry, asking for maximum amount of $500 grant in aid which was approved later during the meeting. And Santo Talarico stood on behalf of the Landuche family who are in the midst of setting up a property on Government St. in Ashcroft for housing. He was asking for certain fees to be waived and to have a culvert and drainage study be done as quickly as possible. The Ashcroft Village took a stance of the village will have the study done, with the aid of a grant, and if that grant doesn't cover the full cost of the study the remaining amount would be spread out amongst all of the appropriate parties. The Village took Mr. Talaricos suggestions under advisement and said that they would talk about it during the new business portion of the Meeting. Ultimately the Village said they will follow the rules and guidelines of the study, but will ask if a time frame could be pushed up, but stood firm of the dispersal of still owed funds.

Members of the Ashcroft and District Lions Club are all smiles, as they're once again taking part in the Tim Horton's Smile Cookies campaign at the Esso Travel Centre. Now through Sunday, Smile Cookies are available at $1 each, with 100 per cent of the funds raised staying in the community to help local causes. They even do deliveries to local businesses!

Dr. Stephen Akinkunmi has left the Ashcroft Family Medical Practice. Ashcroft Hub's local journalist Gareth Smart says "I know that he had been struggling to get a real foot hold in the area, but I didnt to what extent he wasnt succeeding. I thought he was going to other places such as Clinton and Lillooet? It is a shame to see him go, especially since we only have 2 doctors in our catchment area."

Some of the main topics that were discussed at the Cache Creek Council involved a housing study put forward by M’akola Development, showing off certain interesting stats in regards to housing. In Cache Creek, these numbers are from no later than 2106 however. Some of those are that the population in Cache has consistently dropped over time, and that the biggest portion of the population is people between the ages of 25-64, 21% of the residents rent. On average 20% of each age group in Cache Creek sits on the low income line, and of that number most of people are the renters.

Another major topic was the BC Interior Community Foundation. Some new tidbits have been found about this such as that there is a guaranteed 3.5% interest rate on this amount of money, so even at its worst it will still be earning the Village $3500 dollars a year, but NDIT does get one percent of that so the village will be getting $2500 a year for sure. However there is room for a better interest rate as these things do fluctuate so there could be a better year, but never a worse year. Then we came to a most interesting topic that has been boiling over for quite some time. This is of course involving Councillor Annette Pittman vs Seemingly the rest of the council, CFO and Mayor.

The recently named provincial NDP candidate in the Fraser-Nicola riding is a familiar face with a different name from the last time he challenged for the NDP nomination. Aaron Sumexheltza says he's prepared for a snap election: 'If I’m elected as MLA I want to make a difference for people and families who live all across the riding.
