Campobello Islanders are being denied service in mainland New Brunswick after traveling through the US

Some Campobello Island residents are reporting being denied service in mainland New Brunswick after traveling through the US to reach the rest of province. Islanders have reported being turned away from everything from dentist appointments to eye doctor exams after the screening process reveals they've travelled through the US. Former Campobello resident Brent MacPherson says he ran into difficulties booking a hotel room on the mainland this past weekend due to his ties to the island.

"After I booked a hotel room, a couple days later I received a phone call asking if I was indeed coming from Campobello," said MacPherson. "We ended up booking a room somewhere else instead due to their concern."

The quickly approaching end to the seasonal ferry on December 1st is a source of anxiety for many islanders. The seasonal ferry from Deer Island to Campobello is the only route that allows islanders to connect to the mainland without having to travel through the US.

"As it stands, Campobello Islanders won't be able to celebrate Christmas with family on the mainland and vice versa," says Justin Tinker, Chair of Accessible Campobello, a committee dedicated to finding a year-round ferry solution. "Premier Higgs has not acted in the best interest of islanders."

Much has been reported on Vice President Elect Kamala Harris's ties to Canada, with Harris having graduated high school in Montreal, but she also has ties to Charlotte County. Saint Andrews native Vanessa King, a talent manager and writer who now resides in New York City, has worked on both Harris' presidential campaign, as well as the Biden Harris campaign, networking and writing short speeches along the way. King is continuing her work with the Biden-Harris campaign as the Democrats try to secure the two remaining Senate seats in Georgia, which would ultimately give the Democrats control of the Senate with Harris becoming the tie-breaking vote.

"I'm working on a virtual event in Georgia to garner support in that state in order to secure the two remaining Senate seats," said King on the phone from New York City.

Finally, the holidays are just around the corner, and the St. Andrews Chamber of Commerce has made that official with the release of the 2020 Christmas by-the-Sea Holiday Events Guide. Some events have been transformed this year to follow COVID-19 safety protocol, but the town is anticipating an active holiday season.

"Some events look a little different this year due to COVID-19, but we are looking forward to kicking things off with a tree lighting ceremony on November 27th," said Chamber of Commerce President Katy MacDonald.
