An interview with local MP Brad Vis

Brad Vis's involvement in politics stretches back to high school. During a reading that involved the Queen and the Governor General, he found a class that he could take on political science and, while getting his master’s degree, he learned how government works. In his first year out of University, he became a public servant. After some time, he took a leave of absence and became a staffer for the then current MP Ed Fast. After spending some time in and around politicians he came to the revelation that “if these people can be politicians, I can be a politician, and the rest is history. Brad was elected to the Federal Parliament during the last election cycle.

Vis cover the area of the are of “Mission-Matsqui Fraser Canyon, which in land mass is bigger than the state of Israel. This land covers some of Abbotsford, Mission, Agassiz, skips Hope but takes up the Fraser canyon including Ashcroft and Cache Creek.

He has an office space in Mission, and to keep his election promises, he set up a mobile office. He shares office space with our local MLA Jackie Tegart in Ashcroft. Unfortunately, he has not been able to come up recently due to COVID-19. He feels that having a regular and consistent presence is what is needed for our riding.

Some of the projects that Brad was wanting to do before COVID-19 includes the BIG Bar Landslide, which heavily affected the fisheries in our area. “This is a nonpartisan issue to help keep species from going extinct.” And he looks forward to doing more once COVID is over and parliament gets back in session as there is no current set up for a virtual parliament.

Brad Vis talks about some stories where people had been given both EI and the CERB. He suggests that you keep the CERB if that happens as the Government will be call people to get back the over payments. That have been some constructive criticisms from the Conservatives when it comes to the CERB. Brad commented that it does not include students at this time, and due to this will be forced to take on additional debt in the upcoming school year.

Following Vis's Twitter page -- There was a letter that Brad posted from his letter head in regards to the COVID-19 outbreak in the Mission Federal Corrections Facility. There are currently 15 cases, with many more tests out for results. The guards, like any other first responders, are concerned about protecting their families and the inmates. His letter outlines the need to protect these people and to make sure that there is enough PPE. Any guards that have tested positive have been removed from duty until further notice.

Another letter he wrote was to the Minister of Agriculture. The two major things about agriculture talks about seasonal workers from Jamaica or Mexico, to assist in harvesting crops. The worry is about losing our food supply with these workers, so workers have been brought in and put under a 14 day quarantine upon arrival. The other point was about horticulture and the slow down of production and deliveries of seeds and flowers, Brad is asking that some funds be made available to ensure that the producers of these items can make it through these tough times.
