Ecological crisis assembly inspires Climate Action in community
Climate action in Prescott-Russell received a boost thanks to a community assembly held at the Hammond Golf Course, focusing on workshops and discussions on how to combat climate change on both a global and local scale.
Over 30 people, from a variety of backgrounds, came together on December 12th to ask and answer questions on how local municipalities and their residents can influence climate change. Co-organiser Stephanie Marcil was “really pleased” with the “participation and discussion”.
“It was quite interesting to hear the tables buzzing and know that people were really getting into it and speaking out too, which was great,” Marcil told TVC22.
Marcil, a member of the local climate action group ‘Eco East - Éco est’ & resident of the United Counties, said that the main question of the day was, “how can humanity address the ecological and climate crisis in a fair and effective way?”
“I really wanted to provide our community with the opportunity to participate in this global conversation,” she explained. “We really wanted to signal to our municipal leaders that our community cares about this issue”
According to Marcil, having “that community voice heard” is crucial to ensure that poignant action is taken. “It’s where we live, it should be a healthy and comfortable place for us.”
According to Marcil, vocal support from the local community is what is needed to see concrete action taken, encouraging participants and residents to write to their local leaders as well as getting involved with Eco East or any other climate groups.
“And if you can’t get involved, make one small change in your life.” she said. “One little thing to acknowledge that you understand what’s going on and you want to participate and be part of the change”.
