Fallout Continues From Suspension of Richmond Councillor Michael Diggdon
ARICHAT - This week's edition of TELILE 24/7 features several items from the Richmond Municipal Council table, kicking off with public reaction to the one-month suspension of District Two Councillor Michael Diggdon after he was judged to be in breach of the municipality's official Code of Conduct.
At the 2:10 mark, we hear questions and concerns from Richmond County residents Jessica Webb and Tommy Sampson, with the latter noting that he was sent a text by Diggdon that threatened to publicly embarrass Richmond's Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Don Marchand, for not standing at attention during the playing of "O Canada" at the beginning of council meetings.
The discussion shifts to municipal-provincial relations at 22:01, with Richmond Warden Amanda Mombourquette and other members of council expressing concern over the new provincial budget's measures that could impact non-resident property owners in Richmond County and other parts of Nova Scotia. According to the warden, the move would also see provincial intrusion on duties that are currently carried out by municipal units.
Also on this week's show:
29:04 - Richmond councillors agree to cost-share upgrades to Point Tupper's Langley Lane with the province, even though this route was the only one of the four J-class road projects submitted by the county to the province for consideration.
33:44 - Concerns raised by the Richmond County Truckers' Association, which is contracted by the municipality to haul solid waste from its landfill to larger waste facilities in Guysborough County and the Sydney area, prompt Richmond council to further investigate the impact of rising fuel costs on the operators of these vehicles.
39:05 - Details of Richmond County's newly-completed accessibility strategy and a separate strategy for the Village of St. Peter's are revealed at council's April 11 Committee of the Whole meeting by representatives of the two consulting firms that worked with local residents on these plans, Intelligent Futures and Level Playing Field.
52:01 - The Strait-Richmond Community Health Board wins council's support in principle to work with the National Coalition for Healthy School Food to ensure that all Richmond County students, regardless of their family's financial situation, will have access to quality nutritional options at county schools.
54:12 - Led by District Five Councillor Brent Sampson, whose constituency includes Potlotek First Nation, council agrees to ask municipal staff to see if there is room in the upcoming 2022-23 municipal budget to provide $10,000 towards the organizers of the Mi'kmaw Summer Games, which are slated to take place later this year in Potlotek.
