News and Views - Introduction To The First Show of 2023 - EP #1
By Ryan Fields
Ryan is a Community Journalist with Focus Media Arts Centre.
In this Focus Media video program, a new radio show in the Focus Media repertoire is featured. Viewers meet hosts Jesse and Ryan on their debut show called News & Views, as they explain who they are and what their intent is in making the show. The show is a hybrid creation based off an older radio show.
Both hosts believe in the power of community radio and are looking forward to delving into the topics around Regent Park and beyond. With the ever-changing shape of the city around them, they say that they are looking forward to reporting on the many issues affecting communities of Regent Park, the Downtown East, the City of Toronto and beyond.
The hosts touched on how the pandemic affected their lives and those around them. With discussion around vaccines and mandates, both hosts have had to mediate and speak to family about these topics. The ongoing state of health and safety will further be discussed in shows to come, as it is an important issue for them both.
Ryan and Jesse also spoke to the violence on the city’s TTC and on the approval of the new police budget. They also commented on an article from the Toronto Observer which speaks to the policing strategy of the Toronto Police services Neighbourhood Community Officer Program.
The new program is seen as a positive start but one that needs more work in terms of officers connecting with individuals in the community. Jesse questioned whether the TPS would be setting up deeper community policing as he feels it is greatly needed.
With vast winter weather changes happening this week, the hosts commented on the weather extremes and the fact that the environment is rapidly changing. Both Jesse and Ryan are excited and focused on bringing content about Regent Pak and Toronto to you.
