North Cypress-Langford Addresses Safety Issues Throughout the Municipality

This month’s meeting of the North Cypress-Langford Council had just a few pressing items on the agenda before the meeting went 'in camera' to discuss personnel issues.

The Langford transfer station for the municipal garbage dump is currently lacking in adequate washroom facilities, particularly for female staff and particularly in the wintertime when they have to dig out the door to access the port-a-potty. While employees are able to use an off-site washroom, that is neither convenient nor always possible. Council, alongside its partners in the Town of Carberry, have made resolving that situation a priority.

Residents have called Council’s attention to a couple of problem spots on the rural roads in the area, identifying two blind corners that could use a stop sign for safety reasons. Most rural roads through the municipalities have uncontrolled intersections, largely running through agricultural areas which generally have a good degree of visibility in all directions. It is in more heavily treed areas, including those maintained by the watershed association, that there is a problem.

Finally there was another safety issue identified around Brookdale school, which is in a marked 30 km/hour speed limit zone that is not being consistently observed. Installation of  a speed bump was suggested, however many of the roads in the village of Brookdale are unpaved and a speed bump would interfere with grader operations. Council will look at other options to police the area and ensure the safety of students at the school, which houses Kindergarten through Grade 8.

Also covered were minor planning matters, cleanup of the compost pile, skating and curling ice installation in Brookdale, and the 2023 Neepawa Medical Clinic Farm and Leisure Lottery.
