Winnipeggers explored the Vibrant and Innovative World of Agriculture at Exhibition
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) supports the Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector through initiatives that promote innovation and competitiveness and greater understanding among children and adults about food, where it comes from, and how it is grown or raised.
On March 18m 2023, AAFC held an event entitled Discover Agriculture in the City in the Forex Market, Winnipeg, to introduce the participants to the sources of food. Farmers and exhibitors were answering questions of the attendees and providing some activities for children to make this visit enjoyable and beneficial at the same time.
Journalist Zuher Almusre from U multicultural channel spoke with Richard Lavergne, Retired, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and asked him about the importance of this event and the challenges facing agriculture in Winnipeg.
Laverne said that this event comes at the beginning of the spring season to introduce people to food sources and where their food comes from, especially children who believe that grocery stores are the source of their food. So, here they learn that grocery stores are sales centres, and they aren't the real source of food - agriculture is the main source of food as it should be. Also, the children must know the farmer's role in this important vital process of obtaining what they eat. Laverne added that the biggest challenge for agriculture in Winnipeg is the weather, among other challenges such as disease, pests etc., and this may cause a lack of success in their agricultural crop.
In this episode of “Civic Platform” Zuher Almusre spoke with many farmers who represent different organizations in Winnipeg about the reason for their presence, the most important challenges they face in their work, and what are their requirements for their work.
