Winnipeg's Arab Youth Are Experiencing Hurdles When Looking For Work
The Arab community may have more challenges in the Canadian labour market than other communities. For example, some may not want to work in restaurants that serve alcohol, pork products, and non-halal foods. They may face prejudice.
Journalist Zuher Almusre from U Multicultural channel hosted Afif Mutawe, a member of the Arabic community in Winnipeg. Afif has been living in Canada for many years. In this episode, Afif tells us about his experience and learnings over the years in acclimatization and integration into Winnipeg and about his adventures in the Canadian labour market.
Afif said that in the beginning everything is difficult for any newcomer, but the person who crosses the oceans and arrives in Winnipeg is strong. What he has to do here in Winnipeg is to stick together with others of similar background at the beginning. That way he can build a network of relationships that will help him to improve his language and learn how to function here.
Afif also added that young people should work without making excuses. Because a country like Canada is characterized by great cultural diversity, there are many Arab business owners can provide work for them, even if on a voluntary basis, so that they can gain Canadian experience before looking for other opportunities more suitable for their interests and academic background.
Afif recounted the story of a newcomer Arab doctor, who was upset about the difficulty of getting accreditation in Canada. When he was sitting with some Canadian doctors, they told him that he must be patient and train to understand the medical system in Winnipeg and the terminology used by doctors and patients. Otherwise mistakes can be made that could lead to negative outcomes for the patients.
