The Greater St. Stephen Sports Wall of Fame recently held its annual induction ceremony, honouring local athletic figures who have made significant contributions to the world of sports in the Southwest New Brunswick region. The event, held at a packed venue at the Garcelon Civic Centre, was filled with heartfelt speeches, nostalgic moments, and a celebration of the community's passion for athletics.

Among the inductees, Beth Johnston stood out for her exceptional athletic prowess and unwavering commitment to her teams and career as an athlete. Her achievements in multiple sports, including basketball, volleyball, track and field, and ice hockey, garnered her numerous provincial and national awards. Johnston's heartfelt speech touched the hearts of everyone present, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, community, and the joy of play.

Don Walker, another revered figure in the St. Stephen sports scene, was honoured for his exceptional contributions as a teacher, coach, and referee. His leadership led to numerous provincial championships and earned him accolades as the NBIA Coach of the Year. Walker's love for teaching physical education was evident, as he emphasized the crucial role sports played in shaping young lives and instilling lifelong values.

The Lawrence Station Regional Softball girls team was also celebrated for their remarkable achievements. Their triumphs showcased the incredible talent that can emerge from even the smallest schools. Their induction into the Wall of Fame serves as a testament to the power of teamwork and perseverance.

Throughout the ceremony, speakers highlighted the crucial role played by coaches and mentors in shaping the athletes' careers. Judy Wilson was praised for her tireless efforts in coaching multiple sports, instilling discipline, teamwork, and skill development in her athletes. The event also recognized the strong sense of community in St. Stephen, with Beth Johnston recalling the support she received from neighbours, friends, and fellow athletes throughout her career.

The evening ended with the unveiling of the new plaques added to the Greater St. Stephen Sports Wall of Fame in the entryway of the Garcelon Civic Centre.
