Kenora Mayor Andrew Poirier Shares His Vision for the City on NWO Voices Kenora
Born and raised in Kenora, with a brief period of work in Thunder Bay, Poirier's commitment to Kenora runs deep. After a successful career in education, he decided to enter politics and run for council in 2003. Serving two terms, he was re-elected as mayor in 2018 and subsequently ran for the position to have a greater impact on the city's growth and development.
Mayor Poirier highlighted the city's top issues from his point of view as a civic leader, the first being the housing shortage. Recognizing the significance of housing as a foundational issue, he stressed that addressing it requires a comprehensive approach involving planning, infrastructure development, and collaboration with developers and agencies to ensure the provision of essential services.
To tackle the housing crisis, various housing projects are already underway. The mayor expressed hope that these initiatives would go a long way in solving the housing shortage and positively impacting the community.
Additionally, Mayor Poirier acknowledged the ongoing budget challenges the city faces. He emphasized the importance of striking a balance between meeting community needs and maintaining financial stability. With careful consideration and prioritization, he believes the city can overcome these challenges and continue its journey towards prosperity.
As part of the city's growth strategy, Mayor Poirier aims to attract young professionals to Kenora. Creating opportunities for new assessments and economic growth is vital in funding various community projects and fostering positive change.
The Young Ambassador Program, an initiative close to the mayor's heart, plays a pivotal role in welcoming visitors to Kenora. It showcases the city's strengths and fosters a sense of community, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.
Mayor Poirier concluded the interview with optimism and determination for the city's future. He believes that by working together as a team – with the city council and other agencies – Kenora can overcome challenges and continue to prosper.
