Empowered by Love for Humanity - BC Survey and Systemic Racism, Part 2
Continuing from our previous program on the BC Government Survey and systemic racism, Sherry has arranged for a special guest today. Shawn Shabaquay is a member of the Indigenous community affiliated with the Unique Get Together Society. He shares his knowledge, experiences and perspectives with Sherry.
The mission of the Unique Get Together Society states, "we see the value in everyone. We are dedicated to empowering Indigenous, marginalized and underserved communities, individuals and families. Dedicated to strengthening their overall physical, mental, social-emotional, and spiritual development. To assist families, communities and individuals through our programs such as nutritional health, family support advocacy and subsidies. We are here to fight racial and other social inequalities with love and compassion."
Our focus remains on systemic racism and its impact on the Indigenous community. Shawn kindly provides us with a comprehensive overview of the systemic issues at play and discusses potential actions the government can take to reduce or prevent racism. During this session, we delve deeper into the historical and cultural significance of the Indigenous community, exploring topics such as the Indian Act, the band system, and the preservation of Indigenous languages.
Moreover, our discussion extends to the BC Survey's role in improving society. We contemplate whether the survey alone can bring about positive change or if the government must take additional steps and actions to ensure that everyone is well-informed and aware of the issues at hand.
Guest: Shawn Shabaquay, Unique Get Together Society
