On Sept. 15, 2023, Neighbourhood Legal Services celebrated 50 years of serving the community. Located at 163 Queen Street East,  Neighbourhood Legal Services, a non-profit and independent community legal clinic, has been serving the community since 1973. They provide free legal services and assistance to low income individuals who live within their catchment area ( Yonge Street east to the Don Valley Parkway and Bloor Street south to the Toronto Islands) and who qualify for their services.

On hand for the celebrations were staff, clients, and friends. The key speakers were Jennifer Stone, Executive Director; Jack De Klerk, the previous ED; and Josh Vandezande, Board Chair. The event celebrated the critical impact that Neighbourhood Legal Services has had for the last 50 years for areas like Regent Park, Moss Park, Cabbagetown, and St Jamestown where low income people struggle to have  access to justice and equality before the law.

Neighbourhood Legal Services is part of Legal Aid Ontario, the origins of which date back to the 1950s, and is a government-funded organization in Ontario, Canada, that was established in 1977 under the Legal Aid Services Act. Its mission is to provide legal assistance to those who cannot afford legal representation, ensuring access to justice for low-income individuals and marginalized groups. Over the years, LAO has expanded its services, embraced technology, and advocated for social justice, playing a vital role in promoting equal access to legal aid in the province. The range of services provided by Neighbourhood Legal Services covers the following: community-based legal assistance, access to justice through the Legal Clinics Network, housing support, preventing wrongful convictions, promoting fair trials, protecting vulnerable communities,  and providing advocacy and education.

Legal aid services in Ontario serve a crucial role in ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their financial circumstances, have access to justice and can effectively navigate the legal system. These services are essential for upholding the principles of fairness, equality, and the rule of law within society.
