St. Stephen Looks To Bring Back Junior A Hockey Team To The Community
In the Municipal District of St. Stephen Committee of the Whole Meeting for October 2023, key staff and council for the Municipal District of St. Stephen gathered at the Council Chambers in the Garcelon Civic Centre to discuss important matters concerning the community. The meeting focused on two main topics: the incentive package for a Junior A hockey team and a new approach to budget preparation that emphasizes citizen engagement and transparency.
Regarding the incentive package, council discussed the potential benefits of attracting a Junior A hockey team to the Garcelon Civic Centre. They recognized that not only would it provide entertainment for residents, but it would also have positive economic impacts on local businesses. When the former St. Stephen-based team The Aces played at the Civic Centre, they were a big draw to the community. The committee discussed the need for a new agreement for a potential new team and the inclusion of additional clauses to safeguard against missed opportunities. They also emphasized the importance of setting a reasonable deadline for confirmation from the league. After much discussion, the committee agreed to grant the necessary direction for staff to proceed with negotiations and drafting a new agreement.
In a separate discussion, the council explored a new approach to budget preparation that aims to include public feedback and promote transparency. The tight budget timelines in New Brunswick pose a challenge, but the council is determined to involve the community effectively. A proposal was made to organize an informal evening session at the Garcelon Civic Centre. This session would involve a budget presentation and a budget exercise to gather input on taxpayer preferences and priorities for allocating funds. Additionally, a survey similar to the one provided in the meeting package would be distributed to gather further feedback from the community. The council expressed enthusiasm for this initiative, recognizing its potential to bridge the gap between community expectations and available resources.
