November 20th, this year, holds significance as it marks both National Child Day and Transgender Day of Remembrance. To commemorate this, a press conference was organized by the Nova Scotia NDP caucus at the Province House in Halifax. The conference speakers include Susan Leblanc, the MLA for Dartmouth North and NSNDP House Leader, Veronica Merryfield from the Cape Breton Transgender Network, and Dr. Erica Baker, a Clinical Psychologist. The organizers conclude that the past year has been particularly challenging for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, marred by escalating incidents of hatred and transphobia within local communities and educational institutions.

“We’ve seen attacks on the 2SLGBTQIA+ community increase this year, and unfortunately many of these have involved queer and trans youth in and around our schools and education system,” said 2SLGBTQIA+ Affairs spokesperson Lisa Lachance, who was also present at the event. “Today is an important opportunity to recommit to the rights of children and youth across our province to have access to a safe and supportive education.” she added. 

In a statement issued by the organizers, they proposed a set of crucial measures for the government to adopt in response to the current challenges:

Unequivocal Condemnation: The government should unequivocally condemn transphobia and hate, sending a clear message against discrimination within the community.

Healthcare Coverage: An immediate announcement is urged, stating that MSI (Medical Services Insurance) will cover gender-affirming care, aligning with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care 8.

School Resources: Ensuring that schools are equipped with the necessary resources to establish truly safe environments is essential to protect the well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ students.

Dedicated Minister and Action Plan: The establishment of a Minister of 2SLGBTQIA+ Issues, coupled with the development of an Action Plan for Nova Scotia, is proposed to comprehensively address and prioritize the concerns of the community.

In a symbolic gesture at the end of the conference, Lisa Lachance led a flag-raising ceremony of the Transgender Pride flag at Province House. This act, she says, serves as a visible expression of solidarity and support for the transgender community.

The caucus affirms that National Child Day is not only a reminder of the importance of children's rights but also a reaffirmation of the commitment to uphold and protect those rights. Simultaneously, Transgender Day of Remembrance serves as an annual tribute to the memory of transgender individuals whose lives were tragically cut short due to transphobia and acts of anti-transgender violence.
