In a celebration of global significance, Nova Scotia marked the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights with a week-long event organized by the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission. The commemorative week, aptly named Nova Scotia Human Rights Week, unfolded from December 3 to 10, 2023, bringing together communities and individuals to reflect on the pivotal moment that followed World War II and set the stage for the establishment of human rights laws worldwide.

Community Update's Ezekiel Camilleri witnessed the grand culmination of the prestigious Award Ceremony held on December 8, 2023. The ceremony served as a platform to acknowledge the tireless efforts of individuals and organizations in championing human rights causes, fostering inclusivity, and advancing social justice.

The event began with Elder Debbie Eisen's wise teachings, setting the tone for an event that would traverse stories of significance. Amanda MacPhee and Nicole MacKenzie shared a compelling tobacco story, intertwining history with a powerful presentation. Muin Paul's performance of the Honour Song echoed through the venue, resonating with the spirit of unity.

Amidst a backdrop of poignant reflections on the journey since the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, recipients of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Awards took center stage. The awardees, ranging from grassroots activists to influential leaders, were lauded for their unwavering commitment to upholding the principles enshrined in the landmark declaration.

As the event progressed, Ayo Aladejebi,  Director of Race Relations, Equity and Inclusion at the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission,  introduced the Youth Award, delving into the Nia Summit and the pivotal role of Youth Ambassadors. The Youth Award became a symbol of hope as Nathan Tesfazion accepted it on behalf of the Youth Ambassadors, infusing the atmosphere with the energy of the next generation.

Nova Scotia Human Rights Week not only served as a commemoration of a historic milestone but also as a call to action for continued dedication to the cause of human rights. As the ceremony concluded, attendees left inspired and invigorated, ready to contribute to the ongoing global effort to ensure dignity, equality, and justice for all.
