Regent Park Embraces Lunar New Year Celebrations with Fred Victor
In the Chinese lunar calendar, 2024 is the year of the Dragon, and this year's celebrations at Fred Victor at 40 Oak Street in Regent Park, brought together family members, and area residents from diverse backgrounds in the spirit of unity, friendship, and hope for the year ahead.
In a diverse community like Regent Park, Celebrating every sort of cultural tradition holds immense significance and brings numerous benefits: promotion of inclusivity, cultural exchange and understanding, preservation of heritage, enrichment of community life, and economic and social benefits.
In Regent Park people come together to celebrate every sort of cultural tradition in a diverse community and this year's event featured traditional cooking and musical entertainment. A culinary staple of the New Year celebration is the very popular dumpling, which has both symbolic and social significance.
Symbolically, dumplings are made in the shape of ingots (an ancient Chinese currency), and eating them is believed to bring good luck and financial fortune for the coming year. Socially, making dumplings fosters a sense of unity and togetherness by bringing families together to bond and to spend quality time together.
The entertainment for the event consisted of the traditional Fan Dance performed by the Regent Park Senior'sDance Group. The fan dance symbolizes beauty, grace, and harmony, and it is believed to bring joy and auspiciousness for the new year. The historical origins of the Fan Dance go back hundreds of years when fans had a more essential role, as a shield from the sun and blowing sands.
The lunar new year is a traditional celebration for not only China, but also Vietnam, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Tibet, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, and others.
In Regent Park, where diversity is celebrated and embraced, honouring diverse cultural traditions contributes to the fabric of community life, fostering a sense of unity, mutual respect, and shared belonging among its residents.
