During the 2023 self government simulation, hosted in January of 2023, Metis youth from across the province learned about self government, and the basics of resolution writing. A lot of youth who participated in that simulation are currently running for positions for this 2024 PCMNO election. “A lot of the youth that learned about resolutions and had started forming ideas for resolutions and changes they want to see, put forward those things at the AGA. That happened in August,” says Claire Accettola, one of the youth who participated in that government simulation.

Claire Accettola has been a champion for Metis Youth to have a seat at the table as she stated during her time on the campaign trail to become the Metis Nation of Ontario's Youth Council chairperson.. “We are the leaders of today, not tomorrow,” says Accettola. If elected, Claire will work alongside her brother, Evan Accettola, who is acclaimed as the next MNOYC President. “I really want to make sure that he has all the tools under his belt to properly advocate for us on the PCMNO,” says Claire.  Claire hopes that being a sibling of the president will be an asset as she knows where he will need to be supported most.

Why should youth vote in this election? Claire can’t think of a reason not to. “It's a direct opportunity to participate in this government that we fought so long to establish,” says Accettola.

Voting for the PCMNO Youth Council runs from April 8 to May 6. Any Metis citizen between the ages of 16 to 29 is eligible to vote for Youth Council candidates.
