Empowering Voices: How the Dafan Band Redefined Perceptions of Iranian Women in Music

Artists in Vancouver, BC, often struggle to balance their passion for music with the demands of daily life and the city's high living costs. But amidst these challenges, Dafan Band stands out. Led by Bardia Sadeghi, this group consists mainly of female musicians. Their presence isn't just about making music it's about giving voice to women who've been denied the chance to sing or play in Iran.

Here in BC, these women have found the freedom to pursue their musical dreams. Today, we're excited to chat with Dafan Band. We'll learn about their experiences in Vancouver and their mission to empower women through music. Join us as we discover the stories behind their melodies and celebrate their journey of resilience and creativity.

Bardia highlighted that Dafan Band was established in 2012. As an expert in percussion instruments, particularly Iranian traditional ones like Tombak and Daf, he spearheaded this pioneering initiative. Dafan Band holds the distinction of being the first Persian band in North America to feature an all-female ensemble specializing in Iranian percussion.

Bardia's vision transcends mere musical collaboration; it's a mission to showcase the immense talent of Iranian women. He aims to debunk stereotypes and demonstrate that Iranian women possess remarkable musical abilities and deserve the freedom to express themselves through song and instrumentation on global stages.

Sherry inquired about the possibility of men joining. Bardia replied, 'Certainly! In recent years, we've seen an increasing number of men enthusiastically participating, bringing their skills with various instruments to diversify and enrich the musical landscape of Iran.

Bardia pointed out that several groups were present. As the ladies introduced themselves, one individual man also joined in, sharing their instrument and anecdotes. They spoke of their cohesive teamwork, likening themselves to a family. Amidst the challenges and busy lives, they emphasized their shared love for the group, which instilled a sense of belonging and purpose, making them feel fulfilled and valued."

"Bardia, as a leader, aims to include Indigenous percussionists in their group, fostering unity among diverse cultures beyond Iran. He recounted a memorable experience when they were invited to perform in front of the BC premier, David Eby, alongside an Indigenous group. The collaboration brought them a profound sense of satisfaction."

Sherry asked about their awards. Bardia proudly mentioned their recognition from the global music community, including prestigious accolades such as the Parague Music Award and TMC Music Award. He also noted that the Vancouver Sun has interviewed the Dafan Group."

In conclusion, Sherry highlighted the significance of strong teamwork. Despite the challenges artists face today, the group has garnered numerous awards, amplifying the voices of Iranian women worldwide. It's a testament to their power and freedom to express themselves.
