Farmers Market Boosts New Westminster's Local Economy
In a recent interview with NewWest.TV host Deni Loubert, New Westminster Farmers Market manager Emily Gaudette shared heer insights into the market’s origins, economic impact, and environmental benefits.

“The market started as a grassroots initiative in 2009 with only a handful of vendors,” Gaudette explained. “Now, we have over 50 vendors every week, offering everything from fresh produce to artisanal goods.”
Gaudette highlighted the market's contributions to the local economy. She noted that every dollar spent at the farmers market recirculates within the community, supporting small businesses and farmers. “I think farmers markets are such a valuable component of creating sustainable and diverse local economies,” she said.
Statistics from the British Columbia Association of Farmers' Markets reflect the growing popularity of markets across the province. In 2023, farmers markets generated $15 million in sales, up 25% from the previous year. British Columbia now hosts over 145 markets, with numbers steadily increasing as more people prioritize local sourcing. And this is just the start.
Loubert and Gaudette also discussed the environmental benefits of shopping at farmers markets. Local goods travel shorter distances, reducing carbon footprints. “When you buy here, you're cutting out unnecessary transportation and packaging,” Gaudette said.
In addition to being eco-friendly, shopping at the market can save money. Seasonal produce tends to be more affordable, especially when bought directly from farmers, eliminating middleman costs.
Gaudette encouraged more residents to visit the market, which runs year-round at Tipperary Park. “Not only are you supporting your neighbors, but you’re also getting fresher, higher-quality products at prices that often beat big-box stores.”
