On November 4th, New Westminster City Council convened to address the growing homelessness crisis and the urgent need for a temporary winter shelter. Local advocate Jack York, representing the Homeless Coalition, spoke before council members, emphasizing the essential support this shelter would offer as temperatures fall.

According to recent data, New Westminster has seen a 20% increase in its homeless population over the past five years, with estimates showing over 400 individuals currently experiencing homelessness in the city. As shelters and services in surrounding cities reach capacity, the number of homeless people in New Westminster continues to rise, leading to an urgent demand for temporary housing, particularly during the cold winter months. 

York’s appeal highlighted the vulnerability of those without shelter and the increased risks they face as temperatures drop. “A temporary winter shelter isn’t just a warm bed—it’s a lifeline,” he explained. He urged council members to consider the immediate impact of providing shelter during the harshest months, which could prevent health complications and even loss of life among the city’s most vulnerable.

In addition to health and safety concerns, advocates pointed to the strain on community resources and public spaces caused by a lack of adequate housing. With the city’s vacancy rates among the lowest in the region, the need for short-term solutions like a winter shelter has grown increasingly urgent.

Local resident Sarah Thompson, who has lived in New Westminster for over a decade, shared her thoughts: “Our city is facing an undeniable crisis. Homelessness isn’t just a statistic; it’s a growing reality here, and we need real solutions to support those in need.”
