Community Support Needed to Save Pathway

In Your Ward (S2): Ward 7, Councilor Diane Choinière

In the latest edition of "In Your Ward" TVC22 reporter, Thomas Stockting, heads out of the furthest region of the municipality of Clarence-Rockland, Bourget, the meet with Councilor for Ward 8, Ms Diane Choinière.

In the bright sunshine of late June, Thomas and Diane meet up along the infamous Recreational Path, a paved walkway often used by dogwalkers, runner and cyclists alike.

The pair discuss Ms Choinière's life in the first half of the show, exploring the way in which her path lead her towards municipal politics.

With her family having been involved in various levels of politics, it is a way of life that has always felt familiar to Ms Choinière and, whilst still juggling a successful career in education Diane took the step into Municipal politics in 2010.

Bourget, where the Councilor resides, is one of the largest, yet furthest removed, town in the municipality and needs a strong voice on the Council, a voice that Ms Choinière has used to the benefit of her community for over a decade.

One of the latest passion projects from the Ward 8 Councilor is ensuring that the Recreational Pathway, that runs from Hawkesbury all the way to Ottawa isn't decommissioned due to a lack of maintenance.

Currently owned by ViaRail, the pathway follow the same line as the old Ottawa to Montreal trainline but, ViaRail are hoping to get it off their books - and selling it is causing some issues, despite not much in return for it.

The United Counties of Prescott-Russell have been paying for the maintenance of the pathway, but in recent years decided to cut back on the significant funding required for it's upkeep.

Ms Choinière would like to see the City of Clarence-Rockland purchase the part that runs through our municipality, but ViaRail are keen to sell it as a whole.
