A Conversation with Chloe Brown

By Lawrence Rodrigues
Lawrence is student journalist with FOCUS MEDIA  ARTS CENTRE

On December 7th, 2022, the Femme collective hosted a meeting with third place mayoral candidate Chloe Brown in the Daniel Spectrum Arts Centre building. The Femme Collective is a women's media group associated with RPTV. In this meeting, Chloe Brown responds to questions asked by members of Femme about her experiences as a person of colour and a woman running for mayor.

Despite only landing in third place, Chloe Brown had astounding results with her campaign. Chloe Brown had managed to achieve 6.31% of the votes in the election, and although it seems small, it is an amazing result for Chloe Brown's first time running. Chloe Brown ran to win, and although she lost, the experience she gained during this election is invaluable and we're sure she is going to come back to run again in the next election.

The Femme collective, who hosted the meeting was founded by two young women who wanted to reaching out to other culturally diverse young women to make a group where they could discuss important events, or issues, while also hosting workshops and doing other fun activities such as picnics, and scavenger hunts. Femme encourages anyone interested in the group to join, providing experiences that could have life-long benefits, an honorarium of $300 given to each person that joins. The Femme project began in July 2022, and will end iin April 2023.

During the interveiw Chloe Brown recalled her campaign journey and what she experienced as a person of colour and a woman. She talked about how women in general are underestimated because of societal views, such as, women are supposed to be “gentle” and “delicate”. For her first time running, she received results nothing short of incredible. We are excited to see what she can deliver on her next time running as a mayoral candidate for Toronto.
