Georgian Bay Metis Council (GBMC) Councilor-At-Large Wants More Affordable Housing in Region 7
Jessica Sauve became a Councilor-At-Large for the Georgian Bay Metis Council to give back to community, and that’s what she hopes to continue to do if she wins the election for Region 7 Councilor. “We have a lot of issues with housing, with homelessness, with food security, and every year it progressively keeps getting worse and worse,” says Sauve.
Sauve hopes her decades of experience in the mortgage and financing industry will be an asset to her as she works to solve the housing crisis for Metis Citizens in the region. “Unfortunately, with market values, we see an impact on housing from purchasing right down to rentals at extravagant prices. There's empty houses everywhere here, but no one can afford the prices in which they're charging for it, which then in turn leads to not finding something successfully, and being on the street.”
Sauve applauds the MNO for their plan to develop 12 affordable rental units in the Georgian Bay area, but with nearly 25% of Metis Nation of Ontario citizens living in region 7, she says it’s just a starting point. She hopes to help fill the gaps that Metis citizens are falling through if elected as Region 7 Councilor. “Our home buyers program is amazing, getting citizens into homes, but we still fall in a gap where we're not meeting all of our citizens. Not all can apply for that or qualify for pre approved mortgage within our municipal standards.”
Jessica Sauve will be at the at the Candidates Meet 'n Greet at the Georgian Bay Metis Council office on April 10 and at the All Candidates Meeting in Alcona on April 13, to speak with voters.
