Girls Talk
By Victoria Nanneti
Victoria is a youth journalist with FOCUS MEDIA ARTS CENTRE
Girls Talk is a new talk show created by a group of teenage girls from Regent Park, who are a part of the summer youth broadcast journalism program at FOCUS MEDIA ARTS CENTRE. Their goal is to create videos in a talk show format surrounding issues for women and teenage girls alike.
The group consists of five young women aged 17-18, who through conversation provide guidance, advice and support for young women in the Regent Park community and online; videos of the talk show will be uploaded on the RPTV Youtube channel.
The first episode touched upon friendships in high school. The group discussed ways in which friendships can be maintained, how to pick out good friends and when friendships shouldn’t be tolerated. Additionally, the issue of having friendships with “guys” in high school was also discussed, with the consensus that girls tended to be more comfortable with each other, and guys were less likely to show their vulnerability.
The group also aims to talk about controversial topics surrounding misogyny, gender and racism. Aniqa Al-Basith, who acted as the moderator of this episode, inquired what people would like to see in future episodes, and offered that suggestions could presented online and would be taken into consideration for future episodes.
Curated to fit a comfier, casual, and more informal vibe, Girls Talk was filmed in the Daniels Spectrum.
GirlsTalk also plans on being available on tiktok, as well as the instagram they have created under @_girlstalk2022. The email for business inquires is also listed in their instagram bio as girlstalk.focus@gmail.com.
