Nova Scotians 30 and Over Now Eligible for COVID-19 Booster Shots
HALIFAX - As it prepares to take booster-shot appointments for hundreds of thousands of Nova Scotians in the early stages of 2022, the province is also hoping to add new community vaccination centres across the province.
As he launched Nova Scotia's final COVID-19 briefing of 2021, Premier Tim Houston - only four months removed from a provincial election victory that saw his Progressive Conservatives defeat the governing Liberals - urged Nova Scotians to continue following tight new restrictions that came into effect on December 22 and will remain in effect until January 12 at the earliest.
Houston also pledged that the Eastern and Western Zones within the Nova Scotia Health Authority would be among the first parts of the province to see the establishment of community vaccination clinics, and he urged local residents to step up to be a part of delivering COVID-19 booster shots in addition to receiving them for the safety of themselves and their families.
"We need people to help actually getting those vaccines in arms," Houston declared. "It's our biggest hurdle, especially now that we have extreme shortages and pressure on the health care workers and on the health care system...I'm less worried about physical [vaccination] venues, but I am worried about getting enough workers to ramp up the booster program."
The news came as Nova Scotia reported another 511 new cases of COVID-19 in the province, resulting in an active caseload that is now estimated at 5,106. However, these figures may not accurately reflect the current presence of COVID-19's Omicron variant in Nova Scotia, according to the province's Chief Medical Officer of Health. Dr. Robert Strang noted that the sheer volume of cases has overwhelmed Nova Scotia Public Health's testing capabilities, resulting in daily case counts that may actually be smaller than the specific number of Nova Scotians currently testing positive for COVID-19.
Dr. Strang and Premier Houston are scheduled to give a follow-up COVID-19 briefing on Monday, January 3 at 2 p.m. Atlantic Time.
