Rapid Tests and Cloth Masks Coming To Nova Scotia Schools on Monday
HALIFAX - After a week of online learning, public school students in Nova Scotia are still on track to return to their classrooms this coming Monday, and they'll have rapid-test kits and three-ply cloth masks waiting for them when they get there.
The latest COVID-19 media briefing for Nova Scotia, held Wednesday afternoon, saw Premier Tim Houston confirm that 35,000 testing kits would be distributed between 400 schools within the province, with enrolment determining how many tests would arrive at each individual school. Three-ply cloth masks will also be made available for all students and staff at each school, as classroom learning returns to Nova Scotia for the first time since December 17, when the province shut down its schools due to COVID-related staff shortages.
Speaking to reporters, the premier insisted that the province was right in sticking to its January 17 re-opening date for public schools in Nova Scotia.
"For many children in this province, school is where they're safest," Houston declared.
"As we head into this part of the winter, with extremely cold temperatures, school is where many of our children are warmest. Many children only get their food at school. So we understand all of those social impacts, and their medical health and their physical development - schools are the best place for kids."
Houston and the province's Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Robert Strang, also confirmed that they are expecting approximately 1.6 million rapid-test kits to be sent by the federal government over the coming days, and added that 830,000 Nova Scotians are receiving rapid-test kits every week.
Closer to home, rapid-testing centres for COVID-19 have set up shop in three Inverness County locations this week. The Royal Canadian Legion hall in Inverness kicked things off in this regard on Wednesday, while the Port Hood Fire Hall will hold a rapid-test clinic between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. today (Thursday) and the Cheticamp Seniors' Centre - located just behind St. Peter's Catholic Church on the community's main street - will hold its own clinic at the same hours tomorrow (Friday).
There is no word as of yet concerning rapid-testing clinics for either Richmond County or the Town of Port Hawkesbury.
