Regent Park Community Benefits Launch Event to determine $26.8 million
By Fred Alvarado Fred is a community journalist with FOCUS MEDIA ARTS CENTRE
On April 26, 2023, Toronto Community Housing Corporation, (TCHC), and Tridel Corporation announced the launch of the Regent Park Community Benefits engagement process to hear from residents and inform how $26.8 million in community benefit funds will be invested in the community over the next 10 to 15 years, as part of Phases 4 and 5 of the revitalization.
The Community Benefits Launch event was moderated by TCHC representative Esha Kidway.
After opening remarks and land acknowledgement, Jag Sharma, President & CEO of TCHC spoke about the historic milestone that the Community Benefits engagement process means to Regent Park.
Jim Ritchie, President & CEO of Tridel, TCHC’s developer partner for Regent Park revitalization Phases 4 & 5, congratulated TCHC’s community work in Regent Park and reaffirmed their commitment to invest $26.8 million in community benefits funds.
MPP for Toronto Centre, Kristyn Wong Tam, reminded the community that the success of the Regent Park revitalization is not about bricks and mortar but about the people, about Regent Park’s families, dreams and aspirations of what residents want as a community.
City Councillor for Ward -13 Chris Moise shared about the community benefits agreement 'buckets' categories: Bucket 1. Employment; Bucket 2: Major Investments; Bucket 3: Ongoing Local Granting.
Director of Program Development at TCHC, William Mendez, shared more details about the community benefits engagement process.
Regent Park residents and members of the Community Benefits Oversight Working Group (CBOWG), Walied Khogali, Gail Lynch, and Ines Garcia spoke about the inclusion of all Regent Park residents in this agreement and encouraged residents to speak out about what they really want from the $26.8 million community benefits fund.
After the speakers, TCHC staff guided Regent Park residents on how to fill out the online survey.
Regent Park TCHC Tenants and market residents ages 14 and over will be able to have their say on where they would like to see the community funds directed. Residents can complete an online survey on their own or with the support of TCHC community animators and Community Benefits Oversight Working Group (CBOWG) members, who will be in the community.
The Community Benefits engagement process is focused on answering two questions: How should TCHC, Tridel and CBOWG allocate the $26.8 million between three investment 'buckets'? For the Major Investments "bucket," what are the priority areas for spending the money allocated?
