The Role of Peer Support Networks in Managing Mental Health Crises

Mental health remains a taboo topic in many communities, yet it significantly impacts individuals’ well-being, particularly in the wake of financial hardships and societal pressures. In North and West Vancouver, many individuals, including community leaders and business owners, have faced increased mental health challenges, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic and economic downturns.

Samira Gholami, a volunteer TV host and mental health advocate, recently interviewed Atta Emami, an executive coach and leadership development expert, to discuss the growing mental health struggles in the community and practical strategies for stress management.

Atta opened the conversation by highlighting the widespread impact of financial instability. “Many people, especially those who were successful in their home countries, have seen their financial standing drastically change due to currency devaluation and economic challenges in North Vancouver and West Vancouver,” he explained. Samira stressed that business closures in West Vancouver have not only led to job losses but have also affected property values, creating further instability for families.

The discussion shifted to the physical toll of stress. “Mental health struggles don’t just affect the mind, they manifest in the body as well,” Samira noted. Symptoms like cold sores, fever, and skin rashes can all be triggered by high stress levels. Atta added that chronic stress can weaken the immune system, particularly in couples who experience ongoing conflict.

The conversation then turned to practical strategies for managing stress. Atta emphasized the importance of mindfulness and body awareness. “Most people don’t even think about their smallest toe on their left foot, but simply bringing awareness to our bodies can help reduce stress,” he said. He also underscored the effectiveness of breathwork. “Research from Stanford School of Medicine shows that breathing exercises can significantly impact our emotional regulation,” he explained. By observing how breathing patterns change with different emotions, whether happiness, sadness, anger, or stress, individuals can better manage their mental state.

Samira asked Atta about actionable steps people can take to improve their mental health. He suggested simple yet powerful changes: reducing caffeine intake, keeping bedrooms clean and organized, and taking breaks from social media. “Social media fasting can have a profound effect on mental clarity and emotional balance,” he noted.

Throughout the interview, Atta emphasized the importance of supporting those struggling with mental health. During the pandemic, he dedicated 12 hours per week to volunteer work, which later increased to 40 hours due to the overwhelming demand for mental health support. “Helping individuals navigate their mental health challenges is crucial, especially in times of crisis,” he said.

Samira and Atta concluded by encouraging greater awareness and open conversations about mental health. “Change happens when people see others taking action and think, ‘If they can do it, I can too,’” Atta said. By fostering mindfulness, reducing stressors, and supporting one another, the community can work toward a healthier and more resilient future.
