The Lead Story:
Downtown East votes – an RPTV video report

The City of Toronto municipal council and school board elections are taking place on Monday, October, 24, 2022. Historically municipal elections tend to have the lowest voter turnout compared to provincial and federal elections.  According to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, voter turnout was 38.3 percent in the 2018 municipal elections, the lowest since 1982.

One reason for low turnout is that people don’t realize that municipal governments have a lot of impact on their daily lives. Another reason is that residents don’t know who their candidates are and what they stand for?

The Community Civic Engagement Collaborative (CCEC) is a grassroots collective of agencies and residents in Regent Park, Moss Park, St James Town and Corktown neighbourhoods, working to increase civic engagement in elections and beyond in Toronto’s down town east, through non-partisan community organizing.

In an effort to engage residents in the upcoming elections, Regent Park TV joined CCEC in going out to the community of Regent Park to interview residents on how they feel about voting in the upcoming elections.

The candidates running in Toronto Centre Ward 13 are Chris Moise, Ryan Lester, Nicki Ward, Colin Johnson, Miguel Avila, Dan Cortez Manalo, Cleveland Marshall, Caroline Murphy and Dev Ramsumair.
