The EED Working Group of the Regent Park Social Development Plan met in the month of May 2022.
The Regent Park Employment and Economic Development Committee (EED) is one of the four tables of the SDP. The EED table meets once every month to discuss and plan how to remove barriers to employment and economic opportunities for the residents of Regent Park.
Like always, the May meeting commenced with land acknowledgement and a check-in from the attendees.
Brian Eng, the new Employment & Economic Development lead for the table, informed the group that he is building off of the research findings from the community report regarding the employment and economic barriers in Regent Park which was compiled by Ayesha Amin, the lead research and report designer. Brian further presented the Work Group Strategic Plan Framework. The goal of the framework is to provide more information regarding supports and services available to the Regent Park community and increase sustainable employment and economic opportunities.
The Four EED strategic priorities goals identified are Communication, Access, Supports and Space.
Tereza Todorova and Esha Kidwai of TCHC spoke about the Community Benefits Oversight Working Group (CBOWG). The Purpose of the Community Benefits Oversight Working Group is to help develop a community benefits agreement that the community is satisfied and agrees with. Currently the group is looking for more market residents of Regent Park to be part of the group. Tereza and Esha also talked about employment opportunities.
Murwan Khogali of Healing As One, emphasized on learning about how to create their own strategies around hiring practices. He further suggested creating a transparent process by reviewing the terms of reference for the EED table and the hiring practice and encouraging people to become involved in the process. Murwan mentioned that they need to find and explore ways for the Regent Parkers (residents of Regent Park) to be involved in community development work.
