Sherbourne Street Residents Rally Against Proposed Development
By Fred Alvarado Fred is a community journalist with FOCUS MEDIA ARTS CENTRE
On July 22nd, Residents of Sherbourne Street, supported by the Regent Park Neighbourhood Association, gathered outside City Hall to voice their opposition to the proposed development at 191-201 Sherbourne St. The press conference highlighted a series of grievances about the handling of the project, including insufficient community meetings, inadequate information updates, short notice for meetings, and delayed documentation.
The development, spearheaded by Fitzrovia on behalf of Ontario Holdings Ltd. and AIMCo (Alberta Investment Management Corporation), has sparked outrage among residents. They argue that the proposal threatens to irreversibly impact their community and quality of life. Despite the gravity of the situation, residents report that only one community meeting has been held since the proposal's inception, leaving many feeling excluded and unheard.
Key issues raised during the press conference included the short notice given for a critical committee meeting on July 10th and the last-minute release of essential documents, which left little time for thorough community review. Residents also expressed frustration over the superficial engagement from committee members, who seemed disengaged from the community's concerns.
Media coverage of the event amplified the residents' demands for the City Council to thoroughly review the development application at its meeting on October 9, 2024. They call for facilitated meetings with the developer and AIMCo representatives to ensure that their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed directly.
This rally underscores the residents' determination to ensure their voices are heard and their community's interests are protected.
