Taste of Regent Park Increases Access to Fresh Local Food and Fosters Local Entrepreneurship

By Fred Alvarado. Fred is a community journalist with FOCUS MEDIA ARTS CENTRE.

In 2023, residents and people from across Toronto came together to celebrate culture at the Taste of Regent Park community market. The every is held every Wednesday from July 5th to September 6th at the Big Park.

Taste of Regent Park is a vibrant weekly market featuring affordable, locally sourced produce, pay-what-you-can meals showcasing cultural cuisines prepared by local caterers, talented local vendors selling handmade clothes, jewelry, art, crafts and food, entertainers, and community group tables promoting resources in Regent Park.

The community market is hosted by Fred Victor and Daniels Corporation.

Fred Victor's work in Regent Park includes providing free community meals, deeply affordable housing, communal gardens, and skills and advocacy programs. The Taste of Regent Park is an extension of this community support, stimulating social engagement and increasing access to good food. It also fosters local employment and training opportunities for area residents by providing a venue for local vendors, caterers, artists and performers to market and sell their goods.

As part of the Regent Park Revitalization initiative, Taste of Regent Park has become a catalyst for social inclusion. Over the past six years, this event has successfully brought people from diverse backgrounds together in a celebration of community.

This year, the need for affordable food has become even more critical due to inflation and other economic factors. Taste of Regent Park recognizes this challenge and strives to alleviate food insecurity by offering affordable and nutritious options.

Taste of Regent Park provides a platform where everyone can come together, celebrate their cultural heritage, and enjoy delicious meals that nourish both the body and soul.

Regent Park TV joined Taste of Regent Park 2023 and experienced the transformative power of food in fostering a vibrant and connected community.

In brief our mandate is to empower marginalized individuals and under-serviced communities to have a voice and tell their own stories.
