What does the Taste of Regent Park, The Cultural Bazaar and The Moonlight Market have in common?
By Dawar Naeem
Dawar is Community Journalist RPTV Focus Media Arts Centre.
Regent Park is home to three distinct community markets. They are the Taste of Regent Park, The Cultural Bazaar and the Moonlight Market. While each market is unique, there are many commonalities between them.
In the following video, representatives of the Taste of Regent Park, the Cultural Bazaar and the Moonlight Market share their experiences at the 11th international Public Markets Conference held in Toronto.
The Taste of Regent Park, sponsored and hosted by Fred Victor, takes place each Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., during the months of July and August. The event is held in the Big Park directly across from the Daniels Spectrum Arts Centre and is the largest of the three markets.
For the price of a donation (pay what you can amount), attendees at the Taste of Regent Park are treated to a unique meal featuring a sampling of cultural cuisines representing the different cultures that are home to Regent Park.
Local vendors at the market offer an array of handcrafted items such as clothing, jewelry, art, crafts, and delectable food products, providing an excellent opportunity to support local businesses and find one-of-a-kind treasures.
Entertainment in the form of music, dance, and cultural performances keep audiences engaged and entertained throughout the event.
Additionally, community agencies are on hand to provide valuable information and resources, offering insights into social services, educational opportunities, healthcare, and more, ensuring that attendees have access to essential local resources.
Similar to the other markets, the Taste of Regent Park fosters community cohesion, celebrates diversity, and encourages a sense of togetherness and support.
The Cultural Bazaar takes place every Friday from 5 PM to 9 PM, from June to the end of September, on the side walk just outside 660 Dundas Street East.
This weekly event hosted by the Toronto Centre for Learning and Development is considered the preferred way to wind-down after the work week during the summer.
For residents and locals, the bazaar is another delicious gathering with neighbours, but more importantly, it represents an opportunity to socialize, to exchange and share the diversity that is the soul of Regent Park. It is a way of building social cohesion, inclusivity, and a celebratory means of breaking down the barriers that might exist in a multi-cultural community.
One the best features of the bazaar is the opportunity to support local merchants and entrepreneurs. There are no sales targets to meet, and the products on display are made by neighbours people already know and trust. As a patron approaches the bazaar, they are welcomed with live music and chatter and ushered in by waving flags from varied lands.
The Moonlight Market, sponsored by the SDP Employment and Economic Development Committee, takes place every Thursday and Saturday, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., from mid-July to mid-September. The Moonlight Market is held on the East Patio at the Daniels Spectrum Centre at 585 Dundas Street East.
Similar to the other two markets, the Moonlight Market offers a variety of cultural foods for purchase. What truly sets the Moonlight Market apart, however, is its focus on empowering local female-identified entrepreneurs. These talented individuals bring their dreams to life, showcasing a diverse range of offerings. From tantalizing food options that represent a culinary journey around the world to stylish clothing items that reflect the latest trends, and unique handmade goods that are true works of art, there's something for everyone. This market is a testament to the creativity and determination of these local business owners who bring their passions and talents to the forefront.
So, what are the commonalities of three distinct markets?
The Taste of Regent Park, the Cultural Bazaar and the Moonlight Market, all serve as vibrant spaces, not just for commerce but for forging connections, fostering inclusivity, and driving community development. They contribute significantly to community wealth building, economic development, and create safer public spaces through community engagement. Finally, the markets serve as a place where families, cultures, cuisines, and commerce intersect. In a city as diverse as Toronto, these markets reflect the rich mosaic of identities that form the backbone of the Regent Park neighbourhood.
