Justice for Camara

In January 2021, Mamadi Fara Camara, a 31-year-old PhD student at Montreal's Polytechnique engineering university, was falsely accused of attempted murder on a Montreal policer officer and detained for 6 days in the municipal jail.

This was as a result of a police officer who was chased and shot at by a civilian, which was initially mistakenly identified as Camara.

Camara was released after video evidence was found.

On February 7th, 2021, Defund the Police Coalition & Tout Le Hood en Parle organized a demonstration against both racial profiling by police and the media’s quick reaction to declare guilt before the verification of the evidence.

This event was held downtown, two days after a demonstration was hosted in the Parc-Extension neighbourhood, in support of justice for Camara and denouncing racial profiling.

The Quebec Government has since launched an investigation into the the arrest of Camara. The investigation commenced on February 22 and will take 5 months to complete.

One speaker at the event mentioned that this is one of the few times they saw "justice" and the person was still alive. Many in attendance discussed the racial profiling, the trauma generated around Camara's arrest, and the distress around arrests, in particular, a false arrest. Camara was scheduled to be on Quebec show Tout le monde en parle, but canceled his appearance as a result of trauma related to the arrest.

It was also brought up that as a result of footage being taken, Camara was freed, pushing towards the importance of police wearing body cameras and what pushed for Camara's freedom.
