WINNIPEG – On October 26th, Winnipeg heads to the polls to elect its next mayor. Eleven candidates will be on the ballot with a vision of how they will lead Winnipeg for the next five years. Eight candidates have accepted our invitation to convey their plans and promises.
Today, Civic Platform host Zuher Almusre sits down with mayoral candidate Rana Bokhari to learn more about her and her platform.
Rana Bokhari is a professional lawyer practising as a general council with First Nations across Winnipeg and is a human rights advocate. She believes leadership must be rooted in community, sustainability, and prosperity for all people.
Bokhari has promised to divert 10 per cent of Winnipeg's police budget to social service organizations.
Bokhari says she would impose Winnipeg's five per cent accommodation tax on short-term residential rentals — like those offered through Airbnb — to help regulate that industry.
Bokhari says she wants to make sure everyone has the same access to services like community centres in Winnipeg.
Bokhari has also announced a plan to redevelop Portage Place and transform the mall into a community hub.
Bokhari says she wants Winnipeg to partner with a bike theft tracking app to connect bike registrations with police across Canada.
Bokhari also wants to make bike registration free and mandatory for all new purchases.
