Winnipeg Animal Services: How to Be A Responsible Dog Owner
Winnipeg Animal Services invites everyone to visit homeless dogs and give them treats and snuggles on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25th, from 12pm to 3 pm. Visitors are encouraged to bring solid canned dog food, chewy dog treats, hotdogs for training etc. There is a list of useful items to bring at the City website under animal shelter.
Leland Gordon, General Manager of Animal Services Winnipeg, explains that not only does this event provide lots of fun for the dogs and the people attending, it also provides an opportunity for people to meet the dogs, which opens the opportunity for possible adoptions. He expects several hundred people will turn up.
He explains that unfortunately, many shelters are at full capacity as many people gave up pets that they adopted during the lonely Covid isolation days. And some of the animals in shelters are there because people didn't fully understand that having a dog or cat is a lifetime commitment. A stable home situation is a prerequisite to pet ownership.
Providing monetary donations at the Christmas that can help run the shelter are very welcome too, says Gordon. He explains that surplus funds will be sent to northern shelters.
Gordon spoke on various topics, including responsible pet ownership; the importance of following bylaws and licensing your dog, and also some of the costs of having a pet; financial help for low income pet owners to neuter their pets and more.
Winnipeg Animal Service does a lot of work in the community educating people about pet ownership. Gordon said that most people in any major city in Canada are responsible pet owners. It is a small group of people that need help and sometime they just do not understand or choose to be irresponsible pet owners.
