Neepawa Youth Darts Program Sends Participants to Provincial Championships

In Neepawa News & Views this week we’re heavy on the winter sports - but for once the story has nothing to do with ice and snow.

The still very new Neepawa Youth Darts League will be sending several young players to the provincial championship later this month, and they would like to see them go even further. Last year they sent two local players to nationals, and this year they would like to send a full team of eight, which would include male and female representatives in both the junior (15 and under) and senior (16–18) divisions.

The league practices three times a week at the local Royal Canadian Legion. It welcomes youth as soon as they are old enough to safely throw a dart. They are supported by the Manitoba Darts Association as well as by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, which provides all of their practice equipment.

The Manitoba Youth Provincial Championship will be held in Winnipeg on February 25. The Youth Canadian National Darts Championships will be held from May 16 to 19 in Saint Hyacinthe, Quebec.

As well, viewers hear from Rafael Flores, commissioner of the Neepawa Ballers, about the history of the basketball league in Neepawa and what it looks like today. It began back in 2009 when it was called the Neepawa Filipino Basketball League and had just five teams made up almost entirely of employees from HyLife, the local pork processing plant. Today there are around 400 participants from all over Westman on 24 teams in two divisions, junior division for players between the ages of 16 and 26, and senior division for those age 37 and up.

The league is now open to everyone, regardless of nationality, and has seen an increasing number of non-Filipino players over the past couple of years. The same management team also helps run both the basketball and volleyball summer leagues that are tied to Filipino Heritage Month in June.
