Black Montrealers Create New Organization to Support the Black Community of Montreal
On May 2, L'Organe, the francophone web series of CUTV invited the youth organization New Black Generation to discuss the founders' mission and projects.
The discussion was hosted by Clément Lechat, the lead journalist and producer of L'Organe. The guests were Anaïssa, Joséphine and Molly, three of the four founders of the NBG organization.
While NBG was founded in the fall of 2022, the youth organization became active in the summer of 2023.
NBG is a youth-led organization for Black youth in Montreal. The group organizes entertainment and educative events to help the Black youth in Montreal flourish and be surrounded by community. It acts as a support system and platform for the youth, allowing them to delve into the projects and aspirations they are interested in.
Some of the events NGB has organized in the past year include a launch event, a mixer, a talent show, and many more.
These events have allowed Anaïssa, Joséphine, Molly and Sabrina to interact with the community and get to know the Black youth and elders of the Black community in Montreal. It also allowed members of the community to meet between themselves and work on projects together.
"We do it for the community. [For me,] one of the most important things is to show Black youth, all the options that they have, all the things they can do. Especially beyond what media are showing, more specifically Quebecois media, in which we are underrepresented. We want to show them images that are different from what they see online and in media," said Joséphine, explaining the motivation behind one of their events, but behind the organization, in general, as well. The organization stays in contact with other organizations and groups led by Black youth and elders in Montreal to fortify the presence of the Black community in the city.
The organization also has an ambassador program for the youth, where Black youth become members of the organization and have specific responsibilities. These include helping behind the scenes and pitching and organizing events.
