Episode 4 Catching up with Cathy interviews Jessa Turner, Owner TRUESELF Counselling

Jessa Turner, founder of TrueSelf Counselling, shared how her personal journey has profoundly shaped her approach to mental health care. She recounted the devastating loss of her sister at a young age, a tragedy that deeply impacted her and her family. This early experience with grief and loss instilled in her a deep empathy and understanding of emotional pain.

In addition to this loss, Jessa faced her own struggles with mental health during her youth. For years, she was misdiagnosed, leading to challenges in receiving the care she truly needed. It wasn’t until later that she was accurately diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a revelation that became a turning point in her healing journey. This experience underscored for her the critical importance of accurate diagnosis and personalized therapeutic interventions.

Motivated by her personal experiences, Jessa dedicated herself to the field of mental health. She pursued formal education and training, becoming a Registered Professional Counsellor (RPC-C) and establishing TrueSelf Counselling in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Her practice offers a range of services, including individual therapy, couples counselling, and support for youth and children. With a person-centred and trauma-informed approach, she draws from various therapeutic modalities to help clients navigate challenges such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and trauma.

Beyond her counselling practice, Jessa is an active advocate for community mental health initiatives. She played a key role in petitioning for mental health response units in the Lower Mainland, which were successfully implemented in 2023. Additionally, she has organized community groups to support vulnerable populations during the winter months, demonstrating her commitment to fostering hope and resilience in those who need it most.

Jessa’s philosophy revolves around the idea that healing is like "unravelling tight knots," emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying issues to facilitate personal growth. She strives to create a safe and confidential space for her clients, walking alongside them as they work toward self-awareness and healing. Her collaborative approach empowers individuals to connect with their inner strengths and values, helping them realize their full potential and embrace their true selves.

Through her personal experiences and professional dedication, Jessa Turner embodies a compassionate and informed approach to mental health care, making a meaningful impact on both her clients and the wider community.
