On Friday, April 4, a party was held for the community to celebrate the grand reopening of Port Coquitlam's newly revitalized Leigh Square facility. The event featured a ribbon cutting, live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities. Story by LJI reporter Yuna Fahim.

Hundreds of Port Coquitlam residents came out on a sunny Friday evening to experience the transformation of Leigh Square into a vibrant, accessible, and welcoming community hub. The space now features an interactive fountain with synchronized lights and music, a new stage that is now located along the northern edge of the plaza with Port Coquitlam City Hall located directly behind the it. The area now features more accessible pathways, and inviting spaces designed for everyone.

The revitalization of Leigh Square are part of a wider $11.85 million plan to revitalize Port Coquitlam’s downtown core — which include upgrades to Veterans Park, Donald Pathway and McAllister Avenue, and the opening of the Port Coquitlam Community Centre.

"Leigh Square is now a true community hub, designed to bring people together at all times,” said Mayor Brad West.

Port Coquitlam City Councillor Nancy McCurrach was very pleased with the final results of the construction project, "This is arts in action, complete with a stunning Bellagio-style fountain." She adds that the true impact will be in creating a vibrant space that brings together the Port Coquitlam community and welcomes people from beyond.

The celebration also included an art activities at the Michael Wright Art Gallery which filled the Gallery to capacity and a family felting workshop which was held in the Outlet workroom. Those who attended the event had open access to The Outlet, Gathering Place, and Heritage Museum.
