This shorter-than-usual Schreiber Council meeting began with a land acknowledgement recognizing the Robinson-Superior Treaty territory and the traditional lands of the Anishinabek and Métis peoples.

Before moving into formal business, Mayor Mullins presented Councillor Mauro with a five-year service pin in recognition of his contributions. Council then approved the minutes from previous April meetings and accepted the 2024 Annual Summary Report for the Schreiber Wastewater Treatment Plant, submitted by the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA).

Council passed a bylaw establishing a new Discovery Centre Committee. This committee will handle the day-to-day operations of the Discovery Centre, allowing council to take a step back while still receiving regular updates from the group.

Economic Development Officer Jamie Spadoni shared updates, including a grant application for a seniors fair in 2026, student summer job applications, and ongoing collaboration with Superior County on tourism initiatives. The Economic Development Committee’s terms of reference were updated, and council approved the purchase of a storage shed for the Beautification Committee. Council also agreed to send a letter of support for long-term immigrant integration programs, designed to attract new residents and create more opportunities for local businesses seeking workers.

CAO Rhonda Smith reported on the finance department’s year-end progress, Public Works’ winter operations, and planning for Earth Day, Canada Day, and Heritage Days through the Recreation Department. She noted that the digitization of municipal documents is ongoing and that the Municipal Law Enforcement Officer is addressing animal control and parking issues. The Senior Centre Committee continues to work closely with its manager, who is currently working remotely while on medical leave. Smith also proposed municipal support for a Moose Hide Campaign event in partnership with Pays Plat First Nation.

The Director of Operations provided an update on the wastewater treatment plant and announced a joint spring cleanup with Terrace Bay, which was planned for the week before the long weekend in May. Council reviewed a financial summary of the CCR Band event, which had to be cancelled at the last minute. Approval was granted for expenses related to a replacement chlorine analyzer and the annual backflow prevention service. A request from Erica Parent to use the ball field and gym for a hospital fundraiser was also discussed.

Finally, council agreed to continue supporting the Superior High School Corsage Program for graduating students this year. The meeting was then adjourned.
