Montreal Opposition Demands More Action From Projet Montreal to Make Montreal a Green City

The City of Montreal hosted a municipal council meeting to discuss issues pertaining to the public. During the monthly meeting, the Official Opposition denounced the Plante Administration’s lack of action regarding the ongoing crisis in recycling plants.

The Official Opposition mentioned the issue of overcapacity of bale in many of the city’s recycling plants. The overcapacity of bale found in these plants generates greater risks of fires, as well as creates a high contamination rate. For over ten months, contaminated bales have been piling up outside the city, and waste has been sent to landfills. Organic waste facilities and composting plants have also seen their operations stalled. Representatives of the Opposition recommended for the City of Montreal to create a extraordinary board or council to work on the issue.

The Plante administration answered that the context in which the City of Montreal operates regarding collection and recycling was imposed by the government of Quebec, and for the issue to be fixed, the focus will have to be on the transition to a better system.

Other issues mentioned by the Official Opposition included domestic violence and femicides. The Opposition urged the Plante Administration to assist in the creation of a new first-stage women’s shelters for victims of domestic violence, and their children. Since the beginning of the year, 12 femicides took place in the province. Many citizens took to the streets to denounce the problematic and urge the City of Montreal to take concrete action, as well.

The city said it would do sensibilization work, and that it supported the creation of a crisis unit for domestic violence cases.
